The Basics of Skin Care

Some days we get the idea that science is going to solve all our problems. We are often given this impression when it comes to skin care, what with all the high tech lotions and potions that aim to make you young again, or thinner, cooler or a different skin tone. Of course plenty of these products are very good, yet it would be a big mistake to hang on for the magic wand of science to help out and forget about the very simple things we must to do to keep out skin looking good.

This article will begin by looking at the basics and then go on to all the products you can use to enhance your skin. Protection is one of the most basic things we can do to look after our skin. Prematurely aged skin is often the result of too much exposure to the sun. However, this does not mean you need to avoid the sun entirely. Being in the sun makes us feel great and provides us with a vital source of vitamin D. However, ultra violet light does do harm to the skin, even causing skin cancer in some cases. So try not to ever get sunburnt - this will seriously harm the skin. Shield the delicate skin on the face from the sun by wearing a hat and use a lip screen with a high factor.

Second tip: keep your skin clean. The world is full of little pollutants, and many people (men as well as women) use make-up or products that can clog the pores. You do not need to stop using make up, but you do need to clean your skin properly. Some people are happy enough using straight-forward old-fashioned soap on their body and face. For other people this product is too harsh - perhaps the majority find soap dries out the sensitive facial skin. In this case go to products that are offered for face cleansing and try to find the one that seems to be best on your skin. Of course you can narrow the search down by knowing your skin type (greasy, dry, sensitive and so on) but the most important thing is how your skin reacts to the product. Always pay attention to how your skin feels and make a choice that is a good combination of quality and value. This is an everyday product and should not cost you a fortune!

Another tip for maintaining healthy and youthful skin is to hydrate it. Keeping your skin moisturized is one of the key aspects of a good skin care regime. This is important all year round, but especially in the summer months. There are a multitude of good quality seasonal products on offer which don't need to cost a fortune.

Exfoliation is also essential to effective skin care, although at times when your skin is irritated you should give it a miss and exfoliation should always be done on skin moistened with water. Exfoliation in the summer months should be done carefully, as sometimes the skin is delicate than usual. There are a wide variety of exfoliants that suit your skin type - for example gentle ones for sensitive skin types. They are also designed for different frequency of usage - for example daily vs more occasional use. The best advice is to pay attention to your skin and decide what your skin needs.
